Michelle's Missive: Updates through July 28th, 2023

Published 10 months agoΒ β€’Β 3 min read

Hi, Reader,

July flew by, right? June was a blur. The WriteHive Annual Conference was fantastic. I'm so glad I participated. The authors I've worked with since were absolute gems, and I loved helping them with their stories. I made a pretty big announcement during the conference, and now that I've got a rough draft and a new presentation coming out for #RevPit First Readers, it's time to let you in on it.

Are you ready?

I'm nervous. Mostly because I've never done anything like this before, so I don't know what kind of reaction to expect.

Okay, for real, here's the informal announcement:

I'm creating a workbook. It's called Self-Edit Like a Developmental Editor. The goal is to give you techniques to edit your fiction novel the way a developmental editor would without the cost. Interested? Click here or the button below to get added to my list of people to notify when the workbook is available.

Maybe enough of you will click the button to motivate me into finishing the dang thing already. πŸ˜‚ Seriously, though, my goal is to have it ready before the end of the year (that's only a few months away!).

I say this in every newsletter, but here I am, saying it again. This summer has been busy!

In June, I completed a line edit and a copyedit and launched a summer critique sale.

Hubs and I saw Melissa VillaseΓ±or live in Austin. She was amazing and hilarious and so nice.

For Father's Day, the kid and I made Hubs homemade cinnamon rolls. He made carne asada to get some good use out of the taco stand and tortilla warmer he got.

In July, I completed a copyedit, a developmental edit, and a manuscript evaluation.

For the kid's 12th birthday, we went to see HAMILTON! We had the Philip cast, and they were AMAZING. Seriously, probably a once-in-a-lifetime experience that we'll all remember and cherish.

We celebrated the Fourth with some sparklers and a BBQ.

The kid had a family birthday party to celebrate this last year before he is a teenager.

Hubs and I saw blink-182 (and Turnstile) in Austin. That was incredible.

Oh, I also launched my new program, Write with Me!

Coming up in August, Rascon Revisions will be celebrating eight years. I'm so proud to have made it this far and to have had the opportunity to help so many wonderful authors. I haven't decided what I'm going to do to celebrate yet. Any thoughts? Feel free to reply and let me know!

Pocket Ponders: Musings for Your Travels

On freelancing...

It's tough out here, folks.

On querying...

Publishing is ever-changing. What worked yesterday might not work today. What worked for someone else might not work for you. The best you can do is try to keep up and give yourself (and your writing) grace.

On writing...

Use action beats instead of dialogue tags to show the reader which character is speaking (while also giving them some subtext!).

On editing...

Your eyes are sharp for only a few hours a day. Put the story down. You'll both be better for it when you return.
